Fair Trade USA (FTUSA)
About the standard
Fair Trade certification is a global movement that brings together a diverse network of producers, companies, buyers, advocates and organizations committed to social compliance, health and safety at work. More than that, it prioritizes human capital, communities and sustainability throughout the value chain.
Fair Trade USA (FTUSA) certification starts from the premise that everyone wants to do the right thing – for their families, for people around the world and for the planet. That’s why it promotes good social practices along production chains, encouraging conscious decisions based on the idea that the products we consume are directly linked to the livelihoods of others. The movement represents a way of building a fairer world through ethical and transparent commercial relations.
Scope
By choosing products with the Fair Trade Certified™ label, consumers support responsible companies, fight poverty, economically strengthen producers, fishermen and workers, and protect the environment. In other words, it’s a business model that contributes to transforming the world. FTUSA’s mission is to develop a global model based on the principle that economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods are fundamental to a fair and inclusive market. The organization also works to promote gender equality, strengthen social policies and preserve decent work standards through needs assessments and social certification processes.

In the global trade scenario, it is still common for production costs to compromise the rights of workers, especially migrants. For this reason, for every Fair Trade certified product sold, the buyer pays an additional bonus on top of the value of the product. These funds are deposited in a community fund managed by a Fair Trade committee, which collectively defines how to invest this amount – generating real and lasting benefits for the community.
