Draft survey
The measurement of drafts and calculations to determine the volume and weight displaced (Draught Survey), is a means of determining the weight of cargo on board the ship, where the displacement of water before and after loading/unloading is measured, and the difference resulting represents the weight of the designated load.
A survey is made by reading the ship’s draft marks at six standard points on the hull: forward, mid and aft, port and starboard for all of them. Revisions to factors such as trim, water density, and unladen weight (with fuels and water) are modified prior to calculating the load weight change.
